Sunday
On arrival
- Aim to arrive between 9.00 am and 9.15 am.
Before the service
- Take all patens etc from their red covers.
- Take all ciboria out of silver cupboard and place on credence table.
- Take large silver paten to credence table.
- Take the prepared chalices to the credence table. Take the largest chalice and the rest of the silver from the cupboard into the vestry.
- Fill the silver cruets – one with water, one with wine – to below pouring lip level.
- Place large wafers that break into 24, into large, lidded silver pyx. See the page on wafers for help with the exact number.
- Place the cruets and the large pyx on the table at the back of the church, in front of the choir.
- Fill the round gold pyx and place on credence table.
- Fill small glass jug with water and place on credence table with lavabo bowl and lavabo linen.
- Place 6 small individual wafers on a silver paten for reserved sacrament and place on credence table.
- Make sure that the coeliac wafer box is on the credence table standing on a silver paten. Place two of the wafers on the paten in front of the box.
- Take the key for the aumbry in the chapel from the silver cupboard.
- Unlock the aumbry and remove the silver ciborium containing the reserved sacrament. Leave the key in the door and the door slightly ajar.
- Consume any reserved wafers and place the empty ciborium on the credence table.
- Check credence table is set up correctly.
- Check that orders of service are on seats as necessary.
After the service
- Clear all papers from chairs and stools.
- If clergy leave sermon notes, place on the chest of drawers in the vestry.
- Leave sick list on lectern.
- Replace altar cloth (if MC has not already done this).
- The MC should extinguish the candles.
- Return any unconsecrated wafers to boxes in drawer.
- Wash up and put all vessels in silver cupboard leaving silver cruets with lids open for drying. All patens should be stored in their red bags. Handle all silver with care to avoid scratching.
- Make sure silver cupboard is locked.
- Switch off the audio cupboard.
- Switch off the water heater.
Leaving the building
- Switch out all lights unless there are 12 noon baptisms.
- Lock sanctuary door.
- Lock vestry doors.
- The Churchwardens are usually responsible for making sure all doors and gates are locked, but if they are not available the Sacristan will do this.
Home communion
2nd Sunday of the month
Check list to see how many small individual wafers required. Place these on large pottery paten and put on credence table.
