It's the word of the Lord, why should we whisper it? — Sister Mary Patrick, Sister Act
Before the Service
Before the service, you should check which verses you are reading and familiarise yourself with them. This is best done a few days in advance, so that you have time to think about the meaning of the reading. Scripture is a story, and the role of a reader is to tell that story. You should try to share not just the words themselves, but the underlying meaning.
During the service
You should make your way towards the lectern so that you are stood ready in time for your reading without any pauses in the liturgy. For the first reading, this is best done during the collect. For the Gospel, the best time for this is towards the end of the hymn. It is not considered disrespectful to anyone else speaking to do this, and we would prefer the service flows smoothly.
When arriving at the Sanctuary, you should climb the steps in front of the altar, pause, and venerate it. This is a simple nod of the head.
If you are reading the Gospel, you should pick up the Gospel from the altar and hold it for a blessing before taking it to the lectern.
When you arrive at the lectern, if needed, adjust the microphone so it is level with your mouth.
Speak clearly, leaving pauses between phrases.
When you have finished, return the Gospel to the altar if necessary.
Pause at the top of the Sanctuary steps, turn, venerate the altar once more, and return to your seat.
