Activity summary

The storage and use of compressed gasses, particularly carbon dioxide/nitrogen mixtures used in dispensing of drinks.

Risk Mitigation
Leaks Regular inspection of all gas lines, including pumps and regulators, in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Gas bottles to be stored upright. Only trained staff to change gas cylinders or kegs, and to check for leaks as part of this process.
Asphyxiation Gas cylinders to be stored in suitably-ventilated areas. Staff to be trained on the dangers of CO2 accumulation in confined spaces. Emergency evacuation procedures to be in place.
Pressure rupture/explosion Cylinders to be stored away from heat sources and sunlight. Temperature to be maintained below 50°C. Regulators must be in place and functioning. Visual inspection prior to use. Cylinders to be secured to prevent falling.
Improper handling Only trained staff to handle gas cylinders. Correct lifting and carrying techniques to be used. Cylinders to be transported on appropriate trolleys when required.
Incorrect gas type Clear labelling on all cylinders and gas lines.
