Tabs
Purpose
From time to time it is convenient for the bar to supply drinks on credit. This may be for a number of reasons, but carries financial risk to the Church if not managed properly. This policy lays out how that risk is managed.
Policy Statement
Bar tabs may be opened at the discretion of the Duty Manager. Normally this should be for a person whose details are known to the Church, for example:
- The venue hirer or similar person (eg father of the bride at a wedding).
- Members of staff or volunteers.
- Another person approved by the Duty Manager.
Before opening a tab, record the tab holder’s name against the ticket in the till system.
The person in whose name the tab is opened is responsible for all purchases made against it.
Tabs should normally be settled before the tab holder leaves the premises. If this is not possible, ensure that sufficient contact details are held to allow the outstanding balance to be recovered.
Do not allow a tab to continue if you have any doubt that it will be paid. You may refuse to open a tab, or require payment before further drinks are served, at any time.
Use common sense when allowing a tab to grow. If the outstanding balance becomes significant, ask the tab holder to settle it before continuing to serve. It is often helpful to ask the tab holder, when opening the tab, how large they expect it to grow and whether they’d like to set a limit.
