Glossary
This page gives a handy list of terms you may hear around the sanctuary, either as a server or sacristan.
- Aumbry
- The safe in the wall in which the Blessed Sacrament is reserved.
- Aumbry light
- A white light that burns constantly above the Aumbry to remind people of the Blessed Sacrament.
- Chalice
- A silver cup for wine.
- Ciborium
- A lidded chalice to hold the Hosts (or bread).
- Corporal
- A large square of linen upon which the vessels for Communion are placed on the altar.
- Credance table
- The shelf/table by the altar on which vessels are kept.
- Incense boat
- Boat shaped metal container in which incense is kept.
- Lavabo
- The ceremonial washing of the celebrant’s fingers at the Eucharist.
- Lavabo bowl and towel
- Used for the above.
- Pall
- A white, stiff square which covers the chalice.
- Paten
- A metal plate on which the large Host (or bread) is placed.
- Purificator
- A white cloth used to cleanse the chalice.
- Sprinkler or aspergilium
- Brass bucket (filled with Holy Water) and sprinkler. Used in blessings.
- Thurible
- A metal censer on chain in which to burn incense.
- Votive candle or pricket stand
- To hold small candles lit for personal prayer.
- Wafer box
- In which communion wafers are kept.
- Vestments
- Special robes worn at the Eucharist. The colour depends on the seasons of the church year.
